Every edition has a story.

Classics is a growing library of verified public-domain plays. We add works in checked batches. The catalog lists the editions available now; it does not claim to contain every classic play.

Each work keeps its own author, translator where applicable, source text, and stable identifiers. We preserve the original wording, speaker order, directions, front matter, and supplementary prose. We do not combine translations or invent missing text.

Dialogue stays dialogue. Prose stays prose.

Source-numbered acts and sections stay intact. We do not create fictional scene divisions. Joint speeches belong to the characters explicitly named in the edition. Where a source does not identify a speaker, we leave the passage unassigned.

Front matter, essays, prefaces, and supplementary prose remain available to read. They are never silently turned into actor dialogue or AI cues.

Public-domain reuse

The source evidence above applies to the named edition and translation, not to every edition of the same work. Our independently hosted reading text omits Project Gutenberg trademark and license boilerplate under its public-domain reuse provision; this separate page acknowledges the sources. Project Gutenberg is not affiliated with or endorsing this theater.

A separate stage for Shakespeare

Visit the Shakespeare theater for its independently hosted Shakespeare collection and its own edition notes. Featuring that sister collection does not merge it with these editions.
